Meet the 85 jury members of the 2020 Golden Pin Design Awards

In a follow-up to last month’s announcement of the 2020 Golden Pin Design Award and Golden Pin Concept Design Award international jury members Fumie Shibata and Marco Casagrande, the organizer announces the full jury list.

For this year’s awards, the organizer has assembled an impressive 85-person jury—the largest yet—of leading international designers and experts in a variety of fields from fifteen different countries and regions, including Japanese designer Eisuke Tachikawa, Swiss graphic designer Felix Pfäffli, ico-D President Johnathon Strebly (Canada) and Singapore-based industrial designer Nathan Yong, Tupperware Vice President of Research and Innovation David Kusuma (US), Vice-President of Design Experience Section, Dassault Systèmes Anne Asensio (France), Xiaomi Group co-founder De Liu (Mainland China), renowned Taiwanese graphic designer Aaron Nieh and Vogue Taiwan Editor-in-Chief Leslie Sun.

The 2020 Golden Pin Design Award’s call for entries ends on July 9th (Thu.) at 17:00 (GMT+8 Taipei). The organizer cordially invites designers from around the globe to take up the challenge!

Since its transformation into an international award in 2014, the Golden Pin Design Award has called for international entries and invited international experts in creative design to serve on the Final Selection jury each year.

This year’s Golden Pin Design Award and Golden Pin Concept Design Award are the first to include international jury members in their Preliminary and Secondary Selection juries, which are made up of experts from fifteen different countries and regions: the US, Canada, France, Finland, Switzerland, Germany, Japan, Singapore, the UK, India, Turkey, Mexico, Italy, Taiwan, and Mainland China.

The size of this year’s juries is the largest yet, and the inclusion of more jury members from overseas will bring an international perspective to the selection process.

2020 Golden Pin Design Award - Felix Pfäffli

Felix Pfäffli  — Designer of Studio Feixen (Switzerland)

Swiss graphic designer Felix Pfäffli is a member of this year’s Final Selection jury. Pfäffli founded Studio Feixen in 2009 and later became the youngest member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI) at 27 years of age.

The studio creates works that span the fields of graphic design, typeface design, animation, and interior design, and collaborates with companies such as Nike, Google, Hermès.

As an active figure in the European creative design community, Pfäffli currently teaches at Lucerne’s University of Applied Sciences and Arts and regularly give speeches and holds workshops around the world.

Nathan Yong — Founder of Nathan Yong Design (Singapore)

Renowned Singapore-based industrial designer Nathan Yong is another member of the Final Selection jury for the Awards. In 2008, Yong was awarded Design of the Year at the President’s Design Award, the highest honor in Singapore’s creative design sector.

Yong has expertise in product design, graphic design, interior design, and brand strategy, and has designed products with international brands such as Ligne Roset, Living Divani, and Domicil. In 2017, Yong was commissioned to design furniture for the shopping center inside the new Jewel Changi Airport.

Eisuke Tachikawa — CEO & Design Strategist of Nosigner (Japan)

Among international jury members is renowned Japanese designer Eisuke Tachikawa, whose social innovation-sparking designs have received national and international accolades.

In 2006, Tachikawa founded Nosigner, a design studio that is committed to social design and innovation. The studio focuses on the issues of revitalizing traditional industries, disaster preparedness, and the dissemination of scientific knowledge.

For example, their Olive project enlisted the help of designers from across Japan in compiling information for a post-disaster recovery information platform and for the design of the Disaster Preparedness Tokyo manual. In response to the recent COVID-19 pandemic, Tachikawa and his team started the Pandaid project to provide the general public with knowledge of pandemic preparedness.

The organizer invited Tachikawa to serve as a jury member for the Communication Design Category in the Secondary Selection of the Golden Pin Design Award, where he will bring a social perspective to the selection process.

The Highlights of 2020 Golden Pin Design Award Jury

In addition to renowned designers and experts in various fields, the Golden Pin Design Award also invited professional representatives of international design organizations to serve as jury members for this year’s awards to introduce a more diverse perspective to the selection process.

Jury members include ico-D President Johnathon Strebly (Canada), Confederation of Indian Industries Advisor Pradyumna Vyas (India), and World Design Organization (WDO) President-Elect and Tupperware Vice President of Research and Innovation David Kusuma (US).

Among this year’s domestic jury members, the organizer invited Leslie Sun (Taiwan), who as Vogue Taiwan’s new Editor-in-Chief across All Media gave the magazine a complete makeover this year, to serve as a jury member for the Integration Design Category in the Secondary Selection of the Golden Pin Design Award.

Sun will bring a fresh viewpoint to the selection process with her rich and diverse background in creative design. Other members of the Secondary Selection jury include KiiTO Boutique Director Vicky Hsieh (Taiwan), UltraCombos Art Director Ting-An Ho (Taiwan), and Xiaomi Group co-founder De Liu (Mainland China). 

The organizer also invited experts in the business and creative design sectors to serve on the Preliminary Selection jury, including Far Eastern Big City Shopping Mall Chief Operating Officer Cindy Yu (Taiwan), CMP Pujen Foundation for Arts and Culture Chief Executive Officer Jonas Ho (Taiwan), and LuxuryLogico (creator of the Sound of Blooming at the 2018 Taichung World Flora Exposition) co-founder Gang-Hwa Chang (Taiwan), who will add their perspectives to the selection process.

The Highlights of 2020 Golden Pin Concept Design Award Jury

The Golden Pin Concept Design Award features a star-studded jury made up of the best of the best. The jury includes President of Industrial Designers Society of Turkey Eray Sertaç Ersayin (Turkey), Professor of the Polytechnic University of Turin Pier Paolo Peruccio (Italy), and Taiwanese renowned designers and creative experts such as the 2018 Taichung World Flora Exposition Chief Design Officer Han-Chung Wu, La Vie Editor-in-Chief Chia-Yu Lin, Bleu & Book founder Shan Shan Tsai, and Mistroom Design Director Yu-Jui Peng.

Calling for Entries

The 2020 Golden Pin Design Award and Golden Pin Concept Design Award are currently calling for entries. Entries for the Golden Pin Design Award must be completed, commercialized products or completed projects, and entrants would be vendors or design teams. The call for entries ends on July 9th (Thu.) at 17:00 (GMT+8 Taipei). 

Entries for the Golden Pin Concept Design Award must be products that will not enter mass production before the end of the current year; products commissioned by a client or yet to be completed will not be accepted. Entrants may be students, designers, or companies, and may enter individually or as a group. The call for entries (free registration) ends on July 15th (Wed.) at 17:00 (GMT+8 Taipei).
