COOP HIMMELB(L)AU was established in 1968 in Vienna, Austria, by its founding members Wolf dPrix, Helmut Swiczinsky, and Michael Holzer (who left the partnership in 1971).

Following Helmut Swiczinsky’s retirement from active involvement in the firm’s daily operations in 2001 and his subsequent departure as a partner in 2006, Wolf dPrix has taken the helm as CEO and Design Principal. The studio boasts a diverse and multicultural team comprising individuals from more than 15 different countries, totaling over 60 dedicated professionals.

With over five decades of experience, COOP HIMMELB(L)AU has gained expertise in conceiving and executing intricate, timely, and profoundly impactful projects across the realms of architecture, urban planning, design, and art on a global scale.

Projects

ROOFTOP REMODELING, FALKESTRASSE - © Duccio Malagamba - Schuppich Sporn & Winischhofer, a law firm, sought to expand their office space vertically, with particular emphasis on creating a spacious meeting room accompanied by several smaller office units.
DALIAN INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE CENTER - © Duccio Malagamba - The Dalian International Conference Center seamlessly integrates multiple functions within a single hybrid structure, resulting in a harmonious blend of functionality and spatial sophistication. It serves as a conference center, theater, and opera house while also housing an exhibition center, with a basement area that accommodates parking, delivery, and disposal facilities. This coalescence of functions generates synergistic effects, enhancing the overall versatility and efficiency of the building.
CENTRAL LOS ANGELES AREA HIGH SCHOOL #9 FOR THE VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS - © Roland Halbe - The urban design strategy draws inspiration from the game of chess, employing it as a metaphor to envision the city as a dynamic entity. In this analogy, buildings assume the role of "agents" tasked with strategic "moves," possessing the capacity to reshape and redefine the urban landscape.
