P. H. Neuhorst, who has devoted his life to artificial light, collaborates with Ilka Henkel to explore the art of light through Die DNA des Lichtes. Their fascination with light and its spectral colors led them to create this platform, which reinterprets traditional art themes such as flora, fauna, still life, nude, and geometry using luminous art.
Die DNA des Lichtes breaks down light into its spectral components—red, green, and blue—and their mixtures, such as yellow, orange, and violet, akin to the effects of a prism or a rainbow. The artistic process resembles painting, beginning with the consideration of the intended representation. This leads to the creation of intricate sculptures, backdrops, and decorations based on the chosen theme.
These artworks are then illuminated with colored light components, influenced by the intensity of the selected colors, reflections, and mirroring, resulting in captivating images with unique luminosity. Mixing the colored light components is similar to mixing paint on a palette: a bit more blue, a bit more violet, more yellow, less red, and so on.
The resulting artworks can be reproduced on various materials. For example, printing on plexiglass allows for backlighting with LED technology. The owner can change the image using a remote control, altering the light color to create different moods. By reducing the red tone, the image becomes more blue and appears cooler, thus changing the atmosphere of the room. In this way, the owner becomes their own artist.
Die DNA des Lichtes confirmed the quality of its work through numerous accolades received over the years, including: Gold Winner of the 2024 MUSE HOTEL AWARDS; Gold Winner of the 2024 French Design Awards; winner of the 2023 Kyoto Global Design Awards in the Environment category; Silver Winner of the 2023 NY Product Design Awards; Gold Winner of the 2022 Muse Creative Award; nominee for the 2021 Architecture Master Prize in Interior Design – Rooms and Zones; winner of the Architect of the Year Awards 2021 by TAC; Gold Winner of the 2021 IID Interior Design Awards; and winner of the 2021 iF Award.
