Masquespacio reflecting on the boundaries between art and design

From a line drawn on paper to 3D printed objects, Mas Creations by Masquespacio presents ‘Forms and Textures’ at Milan Design Week 2022 – a fascinating series interpreted as a furniture and lighting collection or artworks challenging one to reflect on the boundaries between art and design.
“With the Forms and Textures exhibition we wanted to initiate the discussion about the boundaries between art and design including – who is responsible to define if a product is considered an artwork or just a design?
The series is presented as individual objects that can be, at first sight, a chair, lamp or a room divider, although its unusual forms make clear that we aren’t talking about a functional design product” says founders Ana Milena Hernández Palacios and Christophe Penasse.
Instead of fabricating the various elements digitally in 3D – the duo decided to skillfully initiate the creation process simply through the use of a pencil and paper.
The starting point of this eclectic one-of-a-kind collection thus was just a line drawn on a paper, intensifying one’s reflection about that line that defines if an object is an artwork or a design.
Innovatively utilizing a wide contrast of materials, textures and eye-catching vibrant colors – “the designs of Forms and Textures were developed from a 2D point of view and converted in a 3D printed object, with tradition and technology coming together, questioning the use of analogic and digital techniques in art and design” they add.
