IKEA hides a Sonos speaker inside the SYMFONISK picture frame
IKEA and Sonos have released a new “Symfonisk” speaker designed to blend into your home decor and not stick out as an obvious tech gadget.
Is it a picture frame? No, it’s a speaker. Actually, it’s both. Swedish furniture giant IKEA has transformed a Sonos speaker into a work of art, literally. Symfonisk is the latest in the American brand’s collaboration with Ikea, which has brought out innovative speakers, designed to blend in with the home.
Whilst the product is labeled a “picture frame”, Symfonisk won’t actually be able to display your own photos. Instead, the piece is designed as more of an art piece featuring a decorated material no doubt perforated to allow sound to pass through.
“You can choose to hang it on its own on the wall as an eye-catcher, match it with your other pictures on a wall, place it on the floor, or lean it against a wall,” says IKEA. If users purchase more than one of the devices, they will be able to daisy chain them together with only one cord attached to a power source.

The speaker can be hung in either orientation using a magnetic hook. However, it has been designed so that it doesn’t need to be mounted on the wall like a traditional picture frame. Instead, the idea is that customers can lean the device on the floor or place it on a shelf instead.
According to a since-removed webpage on IKEA, the Symfonisk picture frame measures 22 inches high, 16 inches wide, and 2 inches deep. The product will be available in various interchangeable fronts, and the frame will be offered in either black or white finishes.
The site also confirms the Symfonisk picture frame will support Apple’s AirPlay 2, allow for stereo pairings, such as rear surrounds for a Sonos Arc or Beam soundbar. The physical controls are located on the back of the frame right near the Ikea and Sonos logos.
The Symfonisk picture frame joins other existing speakers in the IKEA/Sonos Collection, including the Ikea Symfonisk bookshelf, which looks like a traditional bookshelf speaker but can actually be used as a bookshelf, and the Ikea Symfonisk lamp, which combines a speaker with a table lamp.
