An innovative lighting project that rotates 360 degrees for multiple configurations
The partnership between Studio Jorge Herrera and Flos continues to thrive. The Spanish studio has introduced the new Magic Stick collection—a versatile lighting system that rotates 360 degrees and can be positioned in countless ways to illuminate various areas of a room.
Often, we need to direct light in various directions within the same space, but fixed lighting systems hinder this flexibility. To address this issue, Studio Jorge Herrera designed the Magic Stick for Flos—a revolutionary lighting project that rotates 360 degrees and can be positioned in countless ways.
Inspired by the movement of athletes’ javelins and poles, the Magic Stick transforms the ceiling into a canvas, creating visual effects and dynamic scenarios of light and shadow. Its blades can cross and assume infinite positions, offering versatile and decorative design that redefines spaces and adds a new dimension to interior lighting. The Magic Stick collection is a versatile, timeless, and highly functional solution for various environments, including homes, hotels, restaurants, and offices.
One of the key advantages of this project is its flexibility to deviate from the standard track and illuminate objects from various angles, creating diverse graphic compositions. Additionally, the model offers two lighting options, each available in two different heights. The first option features a ‘symmetrical’ diffused light that provides uniform, soft lighting, distributing light evenly in all directions. This light, connected centrally to the rail, moves reminiscently like a helicopter’s propellers.
The second option is the ‘asymmetric’ luminaire with an adjustable head and three light points, designed to highlight specific areas. This lamp’s connection point is off-center, allowing the light to be positioned outside the vertical axis of the track, offering greater flexibility in directing light.
“During a project I was working on with Flos, the problem arose that there were no similar lighting solutions on the market. This is how Magic Stick was born, putting ourselves in the shoes of interior designers, architects and considering the lighting needs of different spaces“, explains Jorge Herrera.
Magic Stick addresses everyday challenges. For instance, in a hotel, there might be a need to redirect light to create a more welcoming and pleasant atmosphere in certain areas or to highlight specific points, such as a piece of art, a coffee table, or a sofa where guests can comfortably wait in the lobby. This unique and creative solution offers the flexibility to direct light outside the track, allowing for adjustments to the atmosphere based on specific needs at any given moment.
Additionally, Magic Stick incorporates cutting-edge technology to reduce energy consumption. This project is a result of the collaboration between Jorge Herrera Studio and Flos, a historic company renowned for excellence in designer lighting with over 60 years of experience.
