TERRASZA BCN 2024: elevating outdoor design and sustainability in Barcelona
With its second event in Barcelona dedicated to outdoor design this past October, TERRASZA strengthened the concept of exterior design.
The second edition of TERRASZA BCN took place in Barcelona this October, solidifying its position as a key event in the world of outdoor design. From October 16 to 26, the phygital platform hosted an industrial design exhibition, a series of events and gatherings, and a Mediterranean-inspired showcase celebrating craftsmanship and Design Art. The event successfully fostered synergies and encouraged dialogue on lifestyles and creative challenges from a transdisciplinary perspective.
Barcelona proved to be the perfect hub for an event dedicated to outdoor living. TERRASZA BCN 2024 offered professionals and design enthusiasts an unparalleled opportunity to explore spaces, products, and ideas related to outdoor design. As part of the OFF program of Barcelona Design Week, TERRASZA featured multiple highlights:
- Expo/Market: Held from October 17 to 20 on the FX Barcelona Film School terrace, this showcase presented outdoor collections from leading brands in collaboration with designers worldwide, offering panoramic views of the city’s iconic architecture.
- MARE NOSTRUM ART DESIGN Exhibition: Curated by Mariona Rubio Sabatés and envisioned by TERRASZA’s founder Guendalina Perelli (read our previous interview here), this exhibition celebrated Mediterranean-inspired craftsmanship and design. Featuring over 50 artists and designers, the collection underscored the region’s legacy and provided inspiration for outdoor projects.
- City Circuit: From October 16 to 26, a circuit of showrooms, garden centers, and urban spaces across Barcelona promoted collaboration and reflection. Highlights included guided tours of hydroponic gardens by Tectum Garden.
As an OFF event of BDW 2024, themed Design for Human Future, TERRASZA explored sustainability through Leave Plastics to Arts, an exhibition by artist Xavi Muñoz. This initiative also introduced the social awareness project ¡aiguame!, encouraging eco-friendly hydration with refillable water stations.
The event was supported by notable brands such as Andreu World, Artemide, Cosentino, and Ksar Living, alongside partners including A-FAD, FX Barcelona Film School, and iF Design. The closing party, held on October 20, featured collaborations with iF Design and Oblicuo, providing a celebratory finale on the FX Barcelona Film School terrace.
Another key moment was the presentation of Davide Groppi’s outdoor lighting at the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion. On October 23, Davide Groppi and Maurici Ginés delivered a thought-provoking talk on lighting design, moderated by Miriam Giordano of Labóh.
TERRASZA’s scientific director, Juan Cabello Arribas, emphasized the platform’s commitment to bridging design and ecological awareness. The event promoted synergies that encourage dialogue on ecology, creativity, and innovation, aligning with TERRASZA’s manifesto of integrating art, science, and design.
This October edition also saw the release of the latest issue of TERRASZA VIEWS, featuring a map of key event locations and cultural highlights across the city. Looking ahead, TERRASZA will continue its itinerant journey, with planned stops at the Madrid Design Festival in February 2025, Mallorca Design Days in March, and Milano Design Week in April.
TERRASZA once again demonstrated its ability to elevate outdoor design as a significant cultural and market category, fostering a global dialogue on the interplay between design, architecture, and sustainability.
