The new HORL Scissors, a product built to last for generations

The German brand HORL introduces a new household scissors model with unprecedented durability, easy to disassemble and resharpen at home, capable of cutting through up to 180 different materials.

Can a product be both efficient and long-lasting across generations, while also redefining an entire category of accessories? These are the questions that Otmar Horl, engineer and founder of Horl 1993 GmbH—a family-run company based in Freiburg, Germany, specializing in premium sharpening in the field of knife sharpeners and scissors—asked himself. The result: HORL scissors, a revolutionary pair of household scissors that not only exemplify precision and durability but can also be effortlessly disassembled and resharpened at home, setting a new standard in everyday cutting tools.

With a solid background in developing high-precision tools and a strong focus on innovation, HORL is no stranger to creating original design pieces that make a lasting impression. One example is the brand’s 2016 launch of the first roller sharpener, which brought professional-level sharpening into homes and workplaces.

In 2024, HORL introduces HORL Scissors—a model capable of cutting through up to 180 different materials and easy to resharpen using the brand’s own products. These scissors offer greater longevity, user-friendliness, and exceptional efficiency. Designed with ergonomic principles in mind, they are made of high-quality kitchen knives steel and equipped with the HORL cross-hatch grind, the scissors achieve a level of sharpness typically reserved for high-end knives.

To sharpen the scissors, simply open them using both hands until an audible click signals that the resistance of the HORL quick-loaded spring-release has been overcome, allowing the two halves to separate easily. Each half of the scissors has three coordinated contact surfaces, enabling precise positioning at a 45° angle, without tools. You can use the HORL ceramic grinding disc to restore the blades to their original state. The scissors are also compatible with HORL2, HORL2 Pro, HORL3, and HORL3 Pro Rolling Knife Sharpener models.

“We have accepted the state of blunt household scissors for far too long. This is our idea, to simply resharpen scissors ourselves and without any prior knowledge. We want to offer a completely new cutting experience that will delight our customers every time they use them.” says Julian Ruf, Director of Manufacturing and Research and Design at HORL.

As a demonstration to the innovation and uniqueness of this new model developed by the German company, HORL Scissors recently won the iF Design Gold Award 2025 in the Product Design – Tableware/Cookware category.  The jury commented on the product: “This pair of scissors is a great example of quality craftsmanship designed to last. By allowing even an unskilled user to expertly sharpen the scissors, HORL has consciously made a product to last a lifetime – or several. The symmetrical design means it fits equally snugly in the hand of a right- or left-handed user. This is a reminder that the essence of sustainability is quality.”

This is not just a model that can be resharpened at home—something previously not possible for scissors without additional tools—but a product that is simple to use, efficient, and high-quality, designed to stand the test of time
