Edge and Ribbon, V12 Design know-how meets Chinese craftsmanship

With a detailed design approach and an aesthetic driven by functionality, Valerio Cometti + V12 Design studio has developed two product families that, in their sculptural simplicity, represent the values of the Chinese brand Vantis.

An old Chinese proverb says: “a house is crowned by a gateway”, and this is one of the many inputs that the Italian studio founded by Valerio Cometti, V12 Design, has reinterpreted for the creation of two new products for the Chinese brand Vantis: Edge and Ribbon.

Founded in 2005 in Milan, the studio Valerio Cometti + V12 Design works across the entire spectrum of the sector, from Service to Exhibition, adapting its language to the different needs of clients ranging from innovative startups to large multinational corporations. The studio’s method is characterized by the design of unique solutions and future-oriented products that create innovation for companies and value for people.

Creativity without Borders, V12 Design x Vantis

Part of Huawei Home Group Co., Ltd., Vantis places new attention on that element encountered even before entering a private space – home, garage or courtyard – that threshold, often anonymous, which holds the same conceptual value as a business card: the entrance door. With the new collaboration Creativity Without Borders, V12 Design has brought its know-how to the brand through the creation of two architectural objects in which aesthetics are defined by function.

Two visions coming together

The Milan-based studio, with over 20 years of experience in the field of design, was chosen by Vantis for its method, summarized in the principle “the sensitivity of a designer and the rationality of an engineer”.

A philosophy that is also reflected in that of the Chinese brand, where creative vision and aesthetic sensitivity merge with precise and high-quality craftsmanship. This approach is embodied in the brand name itself: VAN represents the artistic exploration inspired by the figure of Vincent Willem van Gogh. T-I-S instead stands for the concepts of Time, Ideal, and Safe: high quality that lasts over time, artisanal solutions of excellent craftsmanship, and more beautiful and safe doors to enhance the environment of people’s entry system.

Going into detail of the two models designed by V12 Design, Edge and Ribbon, the studio worked to transform the surface into a dynamic form, enhance the functionality of the product and create original and impactful volumes.

EDGE, the rational design of the sign

The first project developed is the Edge family, described as the result of a desire to go deep into a sincere and never decorative design process.

“Design for us is understood as a process of synthesis between aesthetics and usability, where formal simplification becomes the main tool to enhance the character and longevity of the product,” says Valerio Cometti.

In this case, there is no standard development based on the layering of elements, but rather a work of subtraction – not meant as minimalism/absence, but as a careful design of signs in which every detail is the result of a function. A sculptural volume in which the handle itself is not an accessory applied onto the surface, but the result of a cut in the sheet, the response to a functional need.

The inclined planes, edges and materials chosen for the Edge family models interact with light in constantly changing ways, while creating the aura of a unique architectural object.

Ribbon, movement captured in a gesture

The second family of entrance doors, an expression of luxury and technology for the international brand Vantis, stems from a design approach focused on the pursuit of pure form, capable of elevating function through the power of volume.

Again, subtraction guides the product design, combined with the idea of an action impressed in time, a material shaped by the gesture of a hand. The surface has been sculpted to create a soft chamfering effect at the center, an incision that seems to gently open the material to reveal its interior. Each variation in depth is the sum of the essential elements composing the object: a monolithic, sculptural form that contains dynamism in a play of weights and volumes.

The two collections designed by V12 Design for Vantis show how even an ordinary object, if properly designed, can encapsulate the values and identity of both brand and designer. On one hand there is the search for a unique and original aesthetic achieved through high artisanal quality. On the other, a clean, rational design that, in its simplicity, is rich in meaning.
