The 2024 edition of the DesignEuropa Awards, held at the National Library of Latvia in Riga, spotlighted the brilliance of European industrial design, with a strong focus on sustainability and innovation.

Organized by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), the DesignEuropa Awards celebrate the best of European industrial design, recognizing outstanding designs that not only showcase exceptional creativity and innovation but also emphasize functionality, sustainability, and environmental consciousness.

The awards aim to highlight products that are protected by registered Community designs, underscoring the importance of intellectual property rights in fostering economic growth and supporting design industries across Europe. Through categories such as Entrepreneurs and Small Companies, Industry, Next Generation, and Lifetime Achievement, the awards honor both emerging talents and industry veterans who are shaping the future of sustainable design. Starting this year, the DesignEuropa Awards will become an annual event, further amplifying its role in promoting excellence within the European design community.

The Entrepreneurs and Small Companies Award was won by the Transparent Turntable, a modern reinterpretation of the classic vinyl record player, designed by Swedish designer Per Brickstad. Crafted with repairability and sustainability in mind, its modular design and sleek aesthetics garnered high praise from the jury.

In the Industry category, the Essenza 300 LT hospital bed, designed by the LINET design team in collaboration with Divan Design Studio, took the top spot. This cutting-edge bed enhances patient care and caregiver efficiency through innovative features focused on safety and ergonomics.

The inaugural Next Generation Design Award went to Chiara Mignani, a talented Italian yacht designer recognized for her eco-friendly and high-performance yacht designs, such as the Nero 777 Evolution and Voltara 645, which feature lightweight materials and electric drive systems.

Finally, the Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to the legendary German designer Dieter Rams. Known for his iconic designs for Braun and Vitsœ, Rams’ philosophy of “less but better” and his dedication to sustainable design have influenced generations of designers worldwide.
