Established in 1981, Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R) is a versatile design studio with a wide-ranging portfolio that encompasses architecture, urban design, installation art, multi-media performance, digital media, and print. Their primary focus is on cultural and civic projects, with a particular emphasis on exploring the evolving role of institutions and the future of cities.

Diller Scofidio + Renfro, headquartered in New York, consists of a dedicated team of over 100 architects, designers, artists, and researchers, guided by four partners: Elizabeth Diller, Ricardo Scofidio, Charles Renfro, and Benjamin Gilmartin. DS+R’s interdisciplinary work has earned them recognition on TIME’s “100 Most Influential People” list, and they were also the recipients of the first MacArthur Foundation grant in the field of architecture.

The MacArthur Foundation praised Diller and Scofidio for pioneering an alternative architectural practice that merges design, performance, electronic media, and cultural and architectural theory, exploring the societal functions of space in various contexts beyond traditional buildings.

Projects

THE SHED - © Iwan Baan - The Shed stands as a nonprofit cultural institution dedicated to commissioning, nurturing, and showcasing original works of art in various disciplines, with an inclusive approach to audiences of all backgrounds. Housed within the groundbreaking Bloomberg Building, this innovative 200,000-square-foot (18,500 m²) structure has the remarkable capability to undergo physical transformations in order to accommodate the most ambitious visions of artists.
ROY AND DIANA VAGELOS EDUCATION CENTER - © Iwan Baan - Situated within the Washington Heights neighborhood of New York City, the Roy and Diana Vagelos Education Center spans 110,000 square feet (10,000 square meters) and is an integral component of the Columbia University Medical Center.
DAVID M. RUBENSTEIN FORUM - The David M. Rubenstein Forum, located at the University of Chicago, serves as a hub for discourse and intellectual exchange, with the primary goal of facilitating meaningful engagement among visiting scholars, researchers, and dignitaries from across the globe.
