“Local expertise has been called into action to bring to life a hospitality experience that is “anything but standard.” Working closely with The Standard‘s in-house design team, the Singaporean architecture and interior design studio Ministry of Design has meticulously conceived 143 rooms, along with both outdoor and indoor common spaces, where nature, whether fictional or real, manifests in various forms and becomes the central theme of the entire project. “It’s all about ‘Statement Making’ and a sense of boldness.” – Ministry of Design.
The unexpected welcomes us right at the reception, where an ironic installation serves as the counter, nostalgically recalling the extravagance of the one designed for the Hollywood hotel* (*In the historic hotel, a large display called ‘The Box’ featured real models posing inside various themed settings.)
Conceived in collaboration with artist Eric Tobua and The Standard Design team, the Singaporean reception counter is a whimsical terrarium that depicts a fantastical garden, ensuring that the theme of nature, the common thread of this urban oasis, becomes immediately apparent upon entering the hotel.
The connection with nature, typical of Singapore’s urban architecture, is made even stronger and more vivid inside the 143 rooms. The interior and exterior communicate seamlessly through full-height glass façade walls, which overlook the pool, its surrounding greenery, or the vibrant Orchard Road.
The carefully curated interiors convey a timeless atmosphere, born from the dialogue between local materials, such as wood and stone, and mid-century furniture pieces. Neutral tones, paired with warm and intense color details, create elegant spaces in which the natural elements, like the timber canopies that run up and over the beds, stand out more than ever.
Bold like the entire hotel – and the brand itself – is the Kaya Restaurant, where the Japanese Izakaya experience is reinterpreted through the spirit of The Standard Hotel Singapore. In this space designed for relaxation and socializing, custom wall paneling by Sara Yen Tanya creates a garden-like atmosphere that eventually opens up to the hotel’s outdoor areas.
A two-floor garden is just the beginning of a journey into an oasis that’s connected to its surroundings but in a way protected from the city buzz. The entire project is inspired by the nearby Botanic Gardens and it includes site-specific works from local artists. The second floor of this green sanctuary leads up to the pool, where a swim-up bar invites guests to sip their favorite drinks without ever leaving the water.
