Steambox: the self-heating lunch box

Steambox’s vision is to share Freedom of Food, by enabling consumers to enjoy a warm and healthy meal, no matter the circumstances.

Unveiled at CES 2022, the ‘Steambox’ self-heating lunch box is an advanced accessory for those seeking out warmer meals on the go. The connected lunch box features a compartment at the base of the container where 35ml of water is required before pressing the built-in button to start the steaming process.

Aesthetically, the lunch box’s svelte design features a 100% natural bamboo wood cover decorating a large plastic box that houses a food-grade stainless steel interior with a double sealing mechanism. It’s also chargeable with each full battery allowing for 50 minutes of steaming, or two-to-three heated meals.

When you’re ready to heat up your food, flick the on the switch, pour the water into the heating element in the box, insert the food container, and select your steam time—reflected by five light-up bullets representing five minutes each—on the box’s exterior.

The lights will flash when your meal is ready. It takes between eight and 12-minutes to perform and works on three steaming levels including low, medium and high.

According to the company, this is enough time to heat the contents to an optimal and food-safe temperature:

  • for relatively small or lighter meals (e.g. veggies) select Low
  • for an average-sized meal (e.g. rice or pasta) select Medium
  • and for larger and/or dense meals (e.g. soups, meat, and potatoes), you’ll select High.

Steambox self-heating lunch box means ‘Goodbye microwaves’

Rather than microwaving food which compromises the nutritional value of our food, Steambox lets users steam-heat meals on the go as a healthier alternative. It also takes the effort out of reheating meals during work or school hours. The device is currently garnering support on Kickstarter where pre-orders are available via Steambox’s website.

The brand also plans to roll out an accompanying app that will allow users to control the box from their phones, as well as follow recipes and track calorie intake.
