This modern take on a century-old invention calls out to coffee lovers

Unlike capsule machines that brew coffee at a simple touch of a button, Israel-based Roee Ben Yehuda skillfully crafts ‘Moon’ – a conceptual one-of-a-kind coffee maker featuring the steampunk aesthetic of traditional espresso makers while maintaining a small shape and cute character.

A multidisciplinary creator, he brilliantly fabricates functional as well as decorative objects that harmoniously merge tradition and contemporary design.

“As a creator I’ve found myself fascinated by crafts, admiring skillful manual manufacturing as well as had a respect for knowledge that was passed on by older generations and the traditions it held within.

​At the same time, however, I want my work to be cheerful, quirky as well as create an inviting atmosphere while seamlessly incorporating natural materials and advanced technologies” says Yehuda.

Today, coffee machines are a common household appliance – with that their design has drastically changed from industrial espresso makers one only sees in cafés and restaurants now.  

“While sitting down to decide on my concept I simply thought – ‘how can I incorporate my love for mechanical as well as tactile-looking products with a clean, updated look?’

I’ve always been intrigued with those big chrome machines that almost look like a small lab, it makes me think about how we perceive coffee now when the whole ritual is being reduced to a capsule and a press of a button” Yehuda adds. 

Inspired by these big chrome machines as well as the science behind creating the perfect brew, he began sketching his innovative eclectic ideas – this is how Moon was born. 

Utilizing 3D modeling and quick-model tests in polyurethane foam, further resulted in this – minimalistically curved and compact prototype comprising soothingly alluring hues that includes key features of the original steampunk brewers.
