The minds behind the Barry table – Alain Gilles & Miniforms
The Barry table is a product of the collaboration between Alain Gilles, a Belgian designer, and Italian design company Miniforms.
After pursuing a career in the international finance world, Alain Giles decided to take a leap of faith and choose design as a second career. He opened his own studio in 2007 and developed his personal approach to product and furniture design, art direction, and scenography. Giles has collaborated with several international design companies and produced many award-winning design products. In 2012, he was named “Designer of the Year” by the prestigious Interieur Kortrijk Fair.
Miniforms is a family-owned Italian design company, founded in the 1970s. Their products are characterized by clear and elegant shapes, sober colors and high-quality materials.
Materials & Techniques – High-quality materials and unique craftsmanship
The Barry table is composed of three thin, distinctly graphic and intriguing volumes, each of them constructed with the finest materials. The tabletops range from wood and ceramic to Palladio Moro marble while the elegant legs are made from curved metal sheets.
The Barry table can be found as a rectangular table in three sizes, or as a round table with three legs in two sizes.
Style & Aesthetics – Simple and subtle, yet very dynamic design
The inspiration behind the Barry table lies in the ideals of the brutalist architecture favoring a simple design with a special accent on the quality of the materials.
The Barry table has an elegant, classic and sculptural-like design. The table’s dynamic personality is revealed by the legs that form a prominent feature and curl distinctly around themselves.
The different top materials and finishes confer value and importance to the sculptural piece. The curved metal sheet legs are lacquered in black, marsala red, bronze, or matte rose gold.
‘’Our furniture will help you to enjoy the little things with elegance. Elegance is nothing but a vibrant, colorful approach ’’ – Miniforms
Probably the most distinctive and unique features of the Barry table, are the graceful curves. The different curves on the table and legs create a unique interaction between the different parts of the table, giving you the impression that the tabletop is levitating into thin air.
The slim metal sheet legs are curved in order to bring warmth and structural strength to the material. As for the tabletop, because of its very deep chamfer on the edges, it also appears from some angles as an extremely thin and lightweight element.
Design Memento – The Barry table introduces us to a new language of furniture that combines simple construction and formality
This is a piece that beams with simplicity, luxury, and grace. Its sculptural design makes a strong statement displayed in your home or office space. It is a table that’s both inviting and interacting, a timeless piece of furniture where people will meet, sit around, talk and bond.
The writer’s comment – A new experience at each new look
The Barry table leaves it up to you to decide which way you are going to perceive it, interact with and in a way partly co-design. Alain Gilles really did prove that design is also about the people, its users. This piece is more complex than it appears, at first sight, it has different layers of understanding and reading. It’s truly fascinating how the Barry table can totally change your perception in so many ways.
