Pininfarina and De Rosa unite for the lightest bike yet

Introducing the lightweight and high-performance De Rosa 70: a cutting-edge carbon road bike celebrating 70 years of the bike company and crafted with Pininfarina’s expertise.

When two giants of Italian design and engineering come together, the result is nothing short of extraordinary, and this is precisely what has happened with the latest collaboration between Pininfarina and De Rosa, resulting in the creation of the De Rosa 70—delivering the most advanced and lightweight road bike in the bicycle designer’s history.

A storied name in the world of premium road bikes, this year the cycling company celebrates 70 years of unparalleled craftsmanship when it comes to cycling. Founded by Ugo De Rosa, the company has become a symbol of Italian excellence, known for its dedication to creating high-performance bikes that cater to professional cyclists and enthusiasts alike. Over the years, the company has continuously pushed the boundaries of bike design and technology, earning a revered place in cycling history, a legacy that mirrors perfectly the impact Pininfarina has had in the world of cars.

Pininfarina, a name synonymous with design across several sectors, has a rich history dating back to 1930 and is known globally for its work with luxury car manufacturers, including Ferrari and Maserati. But of course, as we have storied so many times before, their expertise extends beyond automobiles, influencing a range of products from yachts to architecture, all characterized by an impeccable attention to detail and an innate sense of style.

The De Rosa 70 is the fourth bike designed for De Rosa by Pininfarina, a testament to the ongoing successful partnership between these two iconic brands. Their collaboration began with the SK model, which was met with tremendous acclaim, followed by a restyled version of the SK and the Metamorphosis. Now, in celebration of the company’s 70th anniversary, they have unveiled the latest edition also known as the Settanta, marking their most advanced bike to date.

The latest design is a lightweight carbon aero road bike, almost 25% lighter than its predecessor, showcasing the cutting-edge advancements in materials and design. Officially named the Settanta, it has been designed with professionals in mind, having undergone rigorous testing by De Rosa’s team of professional cyclists, ensuring it meets the highest standards of performance and reliability.

The development involved eight prototypes, each iteration refining the model to achieve its ultimate form. This meticulous process underscores the attention to detail and dedication to achieving the perfect balance of weight, strength, and aerodynamics. The bike’s lightweight frame, weighing just 730 grams, is a marvel of engineering, featuring high-modulus carbon that is smoothly and progressively distributed throughout.

“Developing eight prototypes allowed the design team to iteratively test and refine various aspects of the bike,” explains Pininfarina project manager, Daniele Mazzon. “Each prototype provided critical insights into the bike’s characteristics, aiming to find the perfect balance between lightness and iconicity.”

“Significant changes included adjustments to the frame geometry, with particular focus on the carriage, which underwent multiple revisions to stay true to the original design. The result is a bike optimized for achieving the best performance.”

“We also tested the bike in the Giro d’Italia, which played a crucial role in its development,” explains CEO, Cristiano De Rosa. “The bike’s responsiveness was particularly evident during group breakaways, where it showcased its exceptional performance.”

One of the standout features is its aerodynamics, refined in Pininfarina’s unique wind tunnel—a facility typically reserved for Formula 1 and high-performance vehicles. This wind tunnel testing allows for precise adjustments to reduce drag and enhance speed, making it a top contender in the world of professional cycling. The frame’s design integrates a seamless headset tube, ensuring minimal interference with the aerodynamic flow, while the hexagonal seat tube is engineered to cut through the wind with precision.

“Using a wind tunnel designed for F1 cars allowed for precise aerodynamic testing under various conditions,” explains Mazzon. “The advanced sensors and data collection methods provided detailed feedback, enabling the designers to make specific adjustments that significantly improved the bike’s performance.”

“This level of precision is crucial for reducing drag and optimizing airflow, resulting in better speed and efficiency on the road. The use of such an advanced facility ensured that the bike’s design was aerodynamically superior, providing a competitive edge in performance.”

“Feedback from our team of professional cyclists was fundamental in shaping the final product,” adds De Rosa. “The cyclists’ real-world experience highlighted practical considerations such as handling, comfort, and responsiveness. Their input led to modifications in the bike’s ergonomics, including adjustments to the carriage, saddle positioning, handlebar reach, and frame stiffness, ensuring that the bike met the highest standards of performance and comfort.”

The frame construction utilizes high-modulus carbon fibers with varying textures—12K in the carriage for a defined texture and 1K on the frame body for a smooth, unidirectional finish. These specifications not only contribute to the bike’s reduced weight but also create a visually striking optical effect. The result is a frame that is both incredibly stiff and aesthetically pleasing, embodying the best of Italian design and engineering.

In addition to its aerodynamic prowess, it incorporates modern features that cater to today’s cyclists. The bike accommodates up to 32mm tires, offering versatility without compromising on aerodynamics. The 1.5″ FSA headset is seamlessly integrated into the headtube, with fully internal cable routing for a sleek, clean look. Available in eight sizes and two elegant color options—white or blue—it also features special 70th-anniversary graphics and a distinctive Settanta headtube heart logo.

“The partnership has significantly contributed to our success in competitive markets by enhancing the brand’s reputation for innovation and quality,” says De Rosa.

“Italian design and craftsmanship wield substantial influence in the global cycling industry,” adds De Rosa. “Renowned for their technical expertise and innovative design, Italians excel in creating bicycles that not only embody superior engineering but also evoke a deep emotional connection. Their collaboration with top design professionals seamlessly integrates technical precision with aesthetic value, leaving a profound impact on the industry.”

“In markets like Japan, the design and performance resonate strongly due to its blend of cutting-edge technology, superior craftsmanship, and elegant aesthetics,” he says.

The collaboration not only underscores the excellence of Italian design but also highlights the global appreciation for “Made in Italy” craftsmanship. This is especially evident in countries like Japan, where the cycling community holds creations like this in high regard. The meticulous attention to detail and superior performance of their bikes have garnered a loyal following, proving that the fusion of Italian innovation and design has a universal appeal, transcending borders and resonating with cycling enthusiasts around the world.

“The importance of Made in Italy is fundamental, reflecting values of beauty, linearity, and performance in their products,” adds De Rosa. “This concept is central to the brand’s identity and history and is clearly manifested in the details of their bicycles.”

The De Rosa 70, with its edgy motorsports-inspired lines and advanced aerodynamics, is a testament to what can be achieved when two legendary Italian companies unite their expertise. It is more than just a bike; it is a celebration of design, innovation, and the enduring spirit of Italian craftsmanship. As it continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible in cycling, the De Rosa 70 stands as a symbol of their unwavering commitment to excellence and a bright future ahead.
