Konstantin Grcic, born in 1965, received his initial training as a cabinet maker at The John Makepeace School for Craftsmen in Wood before pursuing a formal education in Design at the Royal College of Art in London. Since establishing his independent design practice in 1991, he has been actively engaged in creating furniture, products, and lighting for renowned design companies.

Today, Konstantin Grcic Design is headquartered in Berlin and operates across a diverse spectrum of design disciplines, including industrial design projects, limited-edition design pieces, exhibition design, and collaborations in architecture and fashion.

Throughout his career, Grcic has collaborated with prestigious institutions and clients, including the Venice Architecture Biennial, the Musée des Art Décoratifs in Paris, the Instituto Svizzero in Rome, the Fonds national d’art contemporain (FNAC), the Serpentine Gallery in London, the St. Etienne Design Biennial, the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, and the MUDAM in Luxembourg.

His exceptional design work has received numerous international accolades, including prestigious awards like the Compasso d’Oro and the German Design Award in Gold. Many of his innovative designs have been enshrined in the permanent collections of the world’s most esteemed design museums, including MoMA in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and Die Neue Sammlung in Munich.

Projects

Dating back to approximately 4,000 BC, fired bricks are undeniably one of the oldest building materials known to humanity. Reimagining such a time-honored product can be a daunting task, as history has likely honed it into its most original and suitable form. The new brick I've designed for Mutina takes on the shape of a double hexagon, a form that seamlessly combines geometric precision with organic qualities. Hexagons are often associated with the construction of beehives, as they represent the most efficient geometry for creating a structure that can expand almost indefinitely. What sets HIVES apart is its versatility. You can use it in two different orientations – upright and flat. When placed upright, the hexagonal design forms a captivating wall pattern. In contrast, using HIVES in a flat orientation means that the hexagonal shape serves as the foundational structure and defines the overall shape of the wall. This adaptability offers a wide range of creative possibilities in architectural design.

The concept behind BENCH originated from a basic wooden beam designed for seating. By extending both ends of this beam down to the floor, the simple bench legs take shape in an inverted U configuration. This form appears familiar at first glance, but it features a unique detail: the seat and legs are cleverly connected by an invisible pin mechanism, eliminating the need for any tools when assembling or disassembling the bench. Taking the same construction principle, the BENCH table complements the bench seamlessly. While the bench maintains a fixed dimension and shape, the tables offer flexibility in terms of various formats and leg positions. The design's timeless simplicity allows both the BENCH and BENCH table to effortlessly adapt to a wide range of environments, whether they are public or private, traditional or contemporary, and whether the setting calls for simplicity or elegance. The deliberate choice of spruce wood, sourced from a local forestry, carries significance. It pays homage to PLANK's heritage as a manufacturer of traditional alpine chairs, grounding the design in a sense of heritage and authenticity.

AKA is crafted from three distinct pieces of plywood, with a central S-shaped element serving as the front leg, seat, and backrest/handle, accompanied by two back legs. When assembled, these components create a precise and structured geometry that inspires dynamic and unconventional seating postures. AKA boldly challenges the conventional notion of what a stool or chair should be, making it particularly appealing to individuals with a penchant for creative and unconventional thinking. These stools offer practicality as well, as they are stackable for easy storage and come in three distinct finishes: natural beech plywood, a striking black stain, or an eye-catching petrol blue stain.
