FLY: García Requejo’s winged lighting takes flight

Designed by Natalia Guzmán Cortés for García Requejo, the FLY lighting collection is characterised by its slim silhouette and winged shape.

Part of García Requejo’s collection of bespoke and ready-to-order lighting pieces, FLY consists of a constellation of suspended wing-shaped LED lamps, each embedded with the impression of suspended flight.

The inspiration behind the FLY lamp is obvious not just in the name but also in its appearance. Mexican designer Natalia Guzmán Cortés created the pendant lamp, which features a winged structure in reference to nature and the act of flying. “The shape of the lamp refers to the wings of a bird,” she explains. “The final shape is an abstraction of the concept.”

It comprises two obround sheets of metal which are sandwiched together with enough space left in between them to house a dimmable LED light. The upper half of each piece fans outwards and forms a wing-like shape whilst an acrylic lining conceals the inner workings of the lamp to create a streamlined silhouette.

Cortés created the lamp for García Requejo, which received a LIT Lighting Design Award in the Pendant Lighting category for its design. She is currently experimenting with other materials such as wood and acrylic in place of metal and looking at how to incorporate smart technology so the light can be controlled from a mobile device.

An exercise in simple geometries

The FLY lamp isn’t overly complicated and that’s what works—a very simple construction makes for a strikingly minimal design that feels very modern. “We combine tradition and technological innovation in elegant designs,” says García Requejo and FLY is exactly that. It’s a contemporary take on pendant lighting that would look great as a single lamp at home or arranged as part of a collection suspended at different heights in a commercial environment.
