Porsche Macan’s bespoke shell lets curiosity breathe

My Two Cars Garage, a creative collaboration between Marc Fornes and Porsche, is a double-curved aluminum pavilion rooted in the present and the future.

Perhaps not coincidentally, the new Porsche Macan accommodates a delicate duality. Its light lilac purple exterior, the shade symbolic of romance, rarity, and magic, is counterbalanced by the carnivorous connotations around the word “Macan”, which refers to “tiger” and “tomcat.” It makes sense, though, since in every great love story, a dose of unpredictability keeps the spark alive.

Unveiled at Garden by the Bay during Singapore Art Week, Porsche debuted the new all-electric Macan engulfed by Marc Fornes’s double-curved, fittingly robust, and just as mesmerizing aluminum pavilion. Aptly entitled My Two Cars Garage, the out-of-this-world interpretation of a two-car garage capitalizes on its idiosyncrasies.

Made of 6,380 1.5 mm-thick aluminum strips, the ultra-thin, self-supported monocoque shell structure stands 7 meters tall. Each strip is uniquely shaped to fit the overall geometry of the installation–a distinct aesthetic fluidity encompasses the resilient structure. Even though the concept was conceived to serve as the breathtaking backdrop for the Porsche Macan’s world premiere, Marc Fornes’s pavilion can host and display up to two cars and embody the center of a not-to-miss reveal with the vehicle dramatically driving through.

The pavilion’s skin’s curves, reflections of the new Macan’s dynamism and unmatched performance, hold its structural strength by carrying the load and thus eliminating the need for internal support and a traditional frame. Its complex, double-curved, continuous, smooth aluminum surface was achieved via advanced computational tools that crafted a seamless correlation between structural performance, curvature, and material efficiency.

Inspired by the Porsche Macan’s intricate body detailing, thousands of perforations punctuate the aluminum skin. The perforations let light filter through during the day casting shifting patterns across the floor. They also allow visitors’ inquisitive thoughts and feats of imagination to burst through as they explore the open interior. At night, the immersive installation is illuminated by purple hues: it glows from within and strikingly reveals its nocturnal charisma. Constructed in puzzle-like modular components with no visible joints, each part of My Two Cars Garage is prefabricated beforehand off-site, significantly reducing the build time.

The one-of-a-kindness of the spatial experience is inextricably linked to its visual identity. The continuous, smooth surface of the pavilion attests to the new Macan’s progressive, timeless, and sleek design, sharpened both inside and out. The synergy between Porsche’s Michael Mauer and Marc Fornes is evident as the designers have crafted not only a structural marvel but an abstract work of art as well.

By putting performance-driven design at the forefront, Formes’ signature techniques of essentialism, specificity, and frozen tension harmoniously glide with Porsche’s commitment to precision, elegance, and innovation. The pulse of the German automobile manufacturer’s iconic aesthetic philosophy vibrates through all the bits and pieces of the concept.

Over the past decade, Marc Fornes’s New York-based design studio, THEVERYMANY, has been exploring (and simultaneously shaping) a unique intersection between architecture, art, and computation. By specializing in large-scale, site-specific structures that converge skin, support, form, and experience in one single system, the team of trailblazing creatives has designed and built many organic, ultra-lightweight, and thin-shell constructions that fearlessly push the boundaries of structure, form, and space. As an unmatched experiential environment, My Two Cars Garage demonstrates the studio’s ever-inventive, questing spirit.
