Sancal introduces Zero: a sustainable “stitch” for the upholstery sector

Sancal is an ambitious company, but not greedy. Our primary aim is to improve everyday life through design, that is to say, our work is to bring happiness.

To meet this mantra, it is fundamental that we find a way to live with the planet in a more sustainable way while contributing to a healthy society, in the ample sense of the term. At Sancal, good design is much more than aesthetics. We prize originality, function, durability and sustainability to create products that will never go out of fashion.

Our creations are designed to last. To age with dignity. Here, we look beyond short-term trends and aim to produce products that will pass the test of time both in terms of their styling and their structural integrity.

Research and development also play an important part in our programmes of continual improvement. We like to push ideas to the limit, to rethink and reformulate them, taking inspiration from other fields to improve our manufacturing processes. We believe tradition and industry must go hand in hand to find new formulas that provide a distinctive value to our products.

So, when the international designer Luca Nichetto told us about his common interest with the textile designer Marie-Louise Rosholm to create a totally new type of sustainable fabric, we jumped at the chance to work with them. Our premise is to design products that live and last together with us, that bring us value and allow us to create unique spaces.

After months of R&D, Zero was developed to envelope the soft volumes of the Next Stop seating system. Zero is a sustainable solution as the new textile generates virtually zero waste. The textile designer used her extensive knowledge of the fashion industry to use a knitting technique that has never been seen in the upholstery sector before. The manufacturing process is similar to that of a tailored jersey. A cover with seamless pockets which are filled with foam pads. Furthermore, these covers that can be replaced, helping to extend their useful life yet further.

Zero’s composition is 90 % natural wool and 10 % polyamide to provide the flexibility required. Technically it meets contract market requirements, such as highly resistance to abrasion (Martindale), peeling norms and is fire retardant without the use of toxic chemicals.

We test our products for durability in an independent laboratory and offer an industry-leading 10-year limited warranty on the interior structures of our soft seating. In addition, wool is itself a sustainable, resistant and low maintenance material. An efficient, highly durable with inherent stain repellent properties. And, for sure, the knitted wool adds a cosy touch to sofas and armchairs.
