Shepard Fairey brings his language to Poltrona Frau’s iconic Archibald armchair
A sculptural seat becomes a meditation on the relationship between humans and nature. With the Archibald Delicate Balance Limited Edition, the street artist reinterprets one of the brand’s icons, originally designed by Jean-Marie Massaud, through symbolic imagery and advanced leather techniques.

Poltrona Frau continues to explore the dialogue between design and the visual arts through a new collaboration with Shepard Fairey, one of the most influential figures in contemporary street art. The result is the Archibald Delicate Balance Limited Edition, which will be presented during Milan Design Week 2026 and conceived as an expression of the brand’s 2026 collection theme, True Over Time — an invitation to reflect on what remains authentic, relevant, and meaningful despite the passage of time.
The collaboration brings together two seemingly distant worlds, urban graphic language and high-end craftsmanship, united by a shared commitment to artistic research and a deep sensitivity to nature. Within this project, the Archibald armchair becomes a three-dimensional canvas on which Fairey constructs a layered visual narrative, transforming a design icon into a contemporary cultural statement.

Active since the underground scene of the 1990s, Fairey has progressively expanded his visual language to achieve global recognition. His work combines symbolic imagery, bold graphic compositions, and a strong narrative dimension, using aesthetics as a tool for social, political, and cultural reflection. In the Archibald Delicate Balance, this approach takes shape as a meditation on the relationship between humans and the environment: at the center of the composition stands a female figure embodying Mother Nature, accompanied by recurring elements in the artist’s visual vocabulary, such as flowers and birds. The image draws from several of his most significant works, reassembled here into a new narrative synthesis.
“When I was first introduced to Poltrona Frau, I was inspired by the beautiful and harmonious designs as well as the expert craftsmanship and authentic point of view of this innovative and storied brand,” comments Fairey. “In our discussions, we aligned on the meaning of the work — the delicate balance between design and aesthetics, as well as the emphasis on respecting and maintaining the beauty of Mother Nature — reflecting that alignment in this ‘Delicate Balance’ armchair.”

The title itself encapsulates the project’s meaning: a reflection on the fragile balance between humanity and nature, and an invitation to pause and acknowledge the vulnerability of this relationship.
Originally designed in 2009 by Jean-Marie Massaud, the Archibald armchair is one of Poltrona Frau’s most iconic pieces, celebrated for its comfort and sculptural elegance. Fairey’s intervention elevates its legacy, transforming it into an object that bridges design and contemporary art. The edition is limited to 200 numbered pieces, each conceived as a unique collector’s item and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.

Leather — Poltrona Frau’s signature material — plays a central role in the project, reinterpreted through an advanced digital printing technique on Pelle Frau® ColorSphere Impact Less. The process involves applying multiple layers of color to specific areas of the graphic, enhancing visual depth and the expressive quality of the texture.
Selected areas are further enriched with three-dimensional embossing, creating subtle reliefs that add a tactile dimension to the surface. This technical development is part of a broader research path through which the company has continuously explored new expressive possibilities for leather while maintaining the highest quality standards.

In line with Poltrona Frau’s environmental commitment and Shepard Fairey’s social awareness, the collaboration also includes an initiative with Treedom. For every armchair sold, two coffee trees are planted in Guatemala, in the Huehuetenango region, helping to support a local community and promote fairer working conditions. Inside the clutch that accompanies each piece, a dedicated QR code allows owners to adopt the trees in their own name, directly linking the object to a tangible action.
